About This Item

New York: Thomas Y. Crowell Company [1958], 1958. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 4to. Unpaginated. Bright red cloth with a black frame of vines and a rooster in black on the front board, black lettering on the spine. Beautiful and bright orange and blue endpapers. Price of $3.00 on the front flap of the dust jacket. A collector has applied a Caldecott Medal sticker to the jacket's front panel. Illustrated with numerous full-page color drawings by the author, Barbara Cooney. Baumgarten 43. Signed without personalization by Cooney on the title page. The winner of the 1959 Caldecott Award. Cooney conducted research on the illustration aesthetics of the Middle Ages using illuminated manuscripts held in the Morgan and in the New York Public Library. Her research informs this book's illustration style, and the pages reflect the allure of an illuminated manuscript. This story is an adaptation from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. A beautiful example. Light rubbing to the boards' edges; jacket with minor edge wear and a tiny stray mark on the rear panel.

Synopsis

In the children's book Chanticleer and the Fox, Barbara Cooney adapted the story of The Nun's Priest's Tale from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and illustrated it. Released by Crowell in 1958, it was the recipient of the Caldecott Medal for illustration in 1959.
