This is the story of Captain Thomas Schofield - soldier of fortune - and of his adventures during the English Civil Wars. From the magnificent opening scene, until the last chapter when he realises that his wanderings are finally over, the action never falters and the interest never lags. With the Captain we see King Charles as a prisoner at Woburn,we meet Cromwell and his lieutenants and we are present at the terrible siege of Colchester. The author has used his immense knowledge of the period to create a background which is authentic down to the last detail, giving the book a remarkable flavour of dignity and reality.Author's first novel, and has been out of print since its first appearance in 1942,when The Times Literary Supplement praised it so highly that it sold out on the day of publication. This re-issue,thirty-three years later (then 1975),makes it virtually a new book for the present generation of readers.
