About This Item

New York: D. Appleton and Company,, 1882. First edition, presentation copy inscribed by Hawley on the front flyleaf: "E. N. Morse Esq with the compliments of the author Fred. B. Hawley". The first book by the American business man Frederick Barnard Hawley (1843–1929). Focusing on the economic aspects of population, the book grew out of a number of articles written by Hawley in the late 1870s. Octavo. Original dark brown-red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, rules to spine and boards in black. Spine lightly sunned with loss to ends, cloth a touch scuffed and soiled, mild spotting to prelims and endmatter, light creasing to front free endpaper and flyleaf, short closed tear to margin of front flyleaf. A very good copy.
