About This Item

London: Hodder and Stoughton , 1908. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine. 9" by 6". Frank M Chapman. A bright and very smart first edition copy of this ornithological study by pioneering field guide author Frank M Chapman. A profusely illustrated study, with 250 photographs of birds by the author. To the introduction he provides the reader with advice and demonstrates his own techniques when taking these photographs. Chapman was a pioneer for melding the worlds of photographs and ornithology as he believed it was an important integration. Collated, complete. There are chapters on birds in the Atlantic coast islands of Gardiner's Island and Cobbs Island, of Florida Birds, Bahamian birds, Californian birds, Western-Canadian birds and British birds. The observations Chapman discusses have been collected during his numerous field trips. To the preface Chapman notes that through this book he wishes to tell the story of various expeditions he has taken. Several of the chapters to this work were previously featured in 'The Century', 'Scribner's', 'Country Life in America', 'Outing' and 'Bird Lore'. An unusually bright copy of this work, which is hard to come by in such a smart condition. In the publisher's original binding. Externally, in a very smart condition with just some minor shelfwear to the head and tail of the spine. The cloth remains bright with the flamingo to the front board in pristine condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots and light offsetting to endpapers. Near Fine
