About This Item

Washington DC: Democratic National Committee, 1929. Hardcover. Ex-Library. Hardcover in red cloth lettered in gilt. Deaccessioned form a seminary clerical library with the usual markings. No jacket. 322 pp. With eight photographic plates. Collection of campaign speeches by New York Governor Alfred E. Smith during his run as the Democratic Party candidate for the U.S. Presidency in 1928. A 4-term governor of the Empire State, Smith (nicknamed "The Happy Warrior") was a staunch opponent of prohibition, was a leader of the populist movement in New York City, but was also a Roman Catholic, a fact that was one of the major reasons he lost to Herbery Hoover.
