The author's first book. Kate Sherwood, (1841-1914), born in Poland, Ohio, was a poet, editor, and reformer. Her husband, Isaac, was editor of the Williams County Gazette. When Lincoln called for volunteers, Isaac enlisted as a private and served to the end of the war, rising to the rank of Brigadier General. In his absence, Kate took over as editor, and later edited the National Tribune, the official publication of the Grand Army of the Republic. She died while representing the Toledo district in Congress and was eulogized by Secretary of State, William Jennings Bryan..
