About This Item
[Glendale: WED Enterprises], 1980. First Edition. Broadside, with text and author's facsimile signature printed in black and silver on mylar, measuring 20.5cm x 25.5cm (8" x 10"). A Fine copy. Bradbury was invited to be the guest speaker at an employee function for WED Enterprises (a subsidiary of Walt Disney Productions) on April 9, 1980. During his address, he presented to the WED staff the poem "Doing Is Being," which he had written specifically for that event. A letter to company employees three months later relayed the following: "Ray wrote these lines in an attempt to describe the motivations that characterize the truly "alive" person. I think he did that very well and, at the same time, I think he managed to pinpoint the very spirit that keeps all of our projects and efforts so innovative and exciting. Our constant dissatisfaction with the status quo and subsequent search for newer and better ways have surely earned us the right to call ourselves "Imagineers." Since Ray drafted "Doing Is Being" with each and every one of us in mind, I'd like you to have your own, personal copy of the poem" (July 14, 1980). An uncommon Bradbury item not produced for commercial distribution, with no copies found in the auction record, and not separately listed in OCLC. [55807].
