NY, Random House, 1962, first edition, first printing.. No dust jacket, this is John Gardner's first book, preceding his The Resurrection by four years, it is essentially a text book written while he was an English professor at Chico State College, Signed by Gardner, it includes John Steinbeck's The Chrysanthemums, pages 248-258, text from The Long Valley, Goldstone & Payne B124, not recorded by Morrow, also includes Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Edgar Allan Poe, Anton Chekhov, James Joyce, and others. Very good plus.

Printed paper wraps bound with rivets. The item has been folded once vertically with wear and loss to the covers. The maps have age toning but are mostly in very good condition, the vertical crease being more a bend on the maps than a crease. The size is 10 by 15 inches; some maps are larger and are folded at the right edges to fit. Only a good copy, but very scarce.

Modern quarter morocco, spine in six compartments with raised bands, leather lettering label, gilt; cloth boards; vellum corners; marbled endpapers. With the original wrappers bound in at the rear. Without the publisher' s catalogue, sometimes present. Title, frontispiece and plates lightly soiled and stained; the bound-in covers are darkened and badly rubbed. A good copy in a fine binding. None of the bibliographical references assign an author. The front cover shows a "swell" in front of a cheval mirror, surrounded by boots, hats, brushes, combs, etc. The rear cover shows a scruffy gent in a bookshop with the caption "I want The Whole art of Dress!" 8vo, [25 x 17cm]; hand coloured wood-engraved plates and test illustrations; original white paper covers printed in red and dark blue with a pictorial design including a child with plumed hat riding a donkey and the title 'Fun for Little Folks' signed by [Edward] Calvert.Heedless Harry, the story is at pains to to state, 'was a kind, good-natured boy, and always ready to share his cake or an apple with his playfellows.' United States, 1900. Very good. Minor spotting, toning. Doilies in excellent shape. No major damage to any of the doilies. A couple short tears, one larger (closed) short tear to left-hand margin of one of the books.. Two (2) handmade books by the same anonymous maker displaying twelve (12) handmade "fibre doyleys". Each doily is unique and measures approx. 5.5" in diameter; the fiber used appears to be a very, very fine organic fiber . Displays the anonymous maker's remarkably fine hand skills. Each octagonal book measures approx. 8.5" by 8.5" and is comprised of six leaves of blue paper secured within cream-colored card wrappers with ribbon. Title "Fibre Doyleys" handwritten in blue ink to upper wrappers. Doilies loose within leaves. Often created for the tourism industry in tropical locales.
