About This Item

London: Simpkin & Marshall, 1835. Hardbound. Good-, exlibrary book with small round ink ownership stamps on all plate pages. Most plates have a tissue guard. One or two pages (sheets) are loose but present. Plates are in a wonderful state of preservation with vibrant colors. Perforation stamp through the first color plates and engraved title-page. Salmon library buckram. Engraved title-page opposite first color plate, followed by second printed title-page. 96 plants are listed, and these are accompanied by 24 hand-colored plates. Each plate illustrated 4 examples, and most have tissue guards. There are 24 plates and 96 plants included in this volume. A very nice reference copy of these first two volumes. The plates are fairly vibrant, less (of course) the library ownership stamp. Each flower is accompanied by a 1-2 page commentary mentioning its history, origin, and botanical peculiarities. Includes plants 385-480. The text in this volumes is followed by a 40 pp. auctarium of the Botanic Garden (with a few line engravings within), which is then followed by the following indexes: Vols. 1,2,3 (combined); Vol. 4; Vol. 5; Index to Part X.
