About This Item

Dublin: H. Fitzpatric, J. Gough and D. Wogan, 1809 Hard Cover. Poor/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. viii, 296pp, lacks all to start of preface, title page enclosed as facsimile only, folding chart at page 290-1 also present only in facsimile, in full calf, severely worn and chipped, hinges cracked and holding by cords only, internally some wear and soiling, and a couple of ink inscriptions. A scarce early accountancy work. The examples taken are the books of a Dublin merchant importing wines, tea, tobacco and other luxuries, and exporting meat, hides, linen etc, on his own ships and in collaboration with others. Amid the nuts-and-bolts portrait of business and trade of the period is an occasional moral sidelight, such as a diatribe against gambling, which occurs after an entry of money won on a horse-racing bet is entered into a waste-book. The facsimile pages are from a library copy of the exact edition..
