DJ is rather grubby, with tarnish marks, rubbing and small associated loss to most edges. prior owner's details on front endpaper. pages are age-tanned, otherwise no significant faults. Octavo 194pp. Following the fall of Singapore the Dutch liner Rosenboom left Padang for Ceylon carrying on board nearly 500 evacuees who were mostly British civilians and soldiers. Shortly after leaving port the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and sank so rapidly that only one lifeboat floated into which 135 people were crammed. The boat drifted for 28 days and covered over 1,000 miles but when eventually it grounded near Sumatra, only the author and three others had managed to survive
