Orig. published in 1917 in the "New York Sun" newspaper, for which the author was a correspondent during World War I, this is the FIRST EDITION in book form from 1918, Foreword by Colonel Theodore Roosevelt (after he was the 26th U.S. President); Introduction by Brigadier-General Evan M. Johnson, & illustrations by Captain J. S. S. Richardson, U.S.R. In 372 pages with pen-and-ink illustrations throughout text. Small (octavo) hardcover with black cloth-covered boards & gilt design/lettering to front & spine is graded only Fair due to these flaws: both front & rear hinges cracked, child's writing in pen inside both front & back cover, else unmarked.
