Black Beauty has been a favourite ever since Anna Sewell wrote about him during the reign of Queen Victoria. Now,nearly a hundred years later, the Pullein-Thompson sisters write again about Black Beauty's relations. There is Black Ebony who,in the 1880' and 1890's,lives in a coal- mining community and is friendly with the pit ponies. It is a harsh life for both man and horse, and Ebony is involved in a miner's uprising and a pit disaster, before he joins a fair and travels the country as a theatrical horse. Black Princess has three very different homes before the First World War plunges her into battle and strife. When peace comes she is bought by a French peasant to work long and lonely hours on foreign soil. But rescue is at hand, and in the end she finds joy and contentment in a most unexpected way. Black Velvet's story is set in the early days of show jumping, but after some years in the ring he goes down in the world and is nearly starved to death in a hiring stable. However,he is reprieved by the outbreak of the Second World War which, oddly enough, brings him peaceful days. A companion volume to 'Black Beauty's Family - see two previous alpha-sequential book ID's rja35029 and rja35039 - which followed this volume in publication. Elisabeth Grant (active from 1960).Children's book illustrator who worked mainly in pen and ink in a sketchy style typical of the 1960's,with varied hatched and off-printed texture and shading. She also designed covers in full colour for Puffin paperbacks (British publisher). Please contact rpaxtonden@blueyonder.co.uk ,because of the lighter weight of this item, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!
