About This Item
Amsterdam, 1653. Copper engraving, 38 x 49 cm, original hand colour, a couple of short closed mariginal tears, Spanish text on verso. Published in volume II of the Spanish text edition of Janssonius' Atlas Novus ('Nuevo Atlas'). Covering the Basque region on the northern coast of Spain, our map includes Santander (San Andero), Vittoria, Bilbao, Pamplona (Plazencia) and San Sebastian. The map also features the old coat of arms of Biscay, two wolves and an oak tree. A pleasing and typically decorative example of 'Golden Age' Dutch cartography. For a hundred years between the late sixteenth and late seventeenth centuries cartographers from the Low Countries led the field. The mapmaker Joannes Janssonius II (1588-1664) married into the Hondius family, already the main rivals to the Blaeu family firm. Janssonius's 'Atlas Maior' issued from 1658 onwards ultimately extended to an extraordinary 11 volumes. Koeman: Atlantes Neerlandici, 1:441.2 Map
