An attractively bound copy of the first edition of Robert Gray's illustrated work on the birds of the West of Scotland. The first edition of this work.Written by Robert Gray, a Scottish banker and famed amateur ornithologist who became the inspector of the rural bank branches, inspecting the local birds on his travels.Illustrated with fifteen lithographs by Frank Bott and William Sinclair. Collated, complete.With the armorial bookplate of David MacBrayne to the front pastedown, his stamp to a front blank, and with the MacBrayne family crest and motto in gilt to the spine head and tail. In 1878, ownership of the shipping company David Hutcheson & Co passed to MacBrayne, and was named after him. The company rapidly became the main carrier on the West Highland routes, providing passenger and freight services to most islands in the Outer Hebrides. In a half morocco binding, with marbled paper covered boards, and gilt detailing to back strip. Light rubbing to rear joint and head of front joint, otherwise externally excellent. Spotting to fore edge of text block. Bookplate to front pastedown, with an ownership stamp to a front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with scattered instances of spotting. Very Good
