About This Item
Paris: Guillaume-François de Bure, 1768 2 volumes in-8, XXIII, 631 pp; 685 pp. Contemporary mottled calf, five raised bands, spines gilt, morocco gilt-lettered labels, gilt supralibros on the front boards (an elephant’s head holding in its trunk a crown pierced by three arrows), all edges painted red, marbled endpapers (edges of bindings rubbed, joints rubbed but firm, bottom corners slightly scuffed, inscriptions on the recto of the front free endpapers, numbers written at the top of the title, the first volume lacking a half-title). From the library of Bolle Willum Luxdorph (1716-1788), a Danish government official, historian, and book collector. Luxdorph left a book collection of 15,000 volumes, which was auctioned after his death. A very good copy of Volumes 2 & 3 devoted to the history of Guillaume-François de Bure's "Bibliographie instructive." It was "the best of the 18th-century rare book bibliographies, important for the new classification scheme employed and for extensive bibliographical data and notes." (Breslauer & Folter 107). Brunet II, 551.
