About This Item
London: The Bodley Head. 1966. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Publisher's original dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in the dustwrapper, illustrated by Stephen Russ. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth and gilt bright and clean. Light, scattered foxing to page block edges, spreading a little to the edges of prelims and final pages. The contents are otherwise clean throughout, without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the fine, original dustwrapper which is bright, clean and without fading. Not price-clipped and correctly priced (21s net) to the front flap. A sharp, attracive copy. James Mossman (1926-1971) is best known as a journalist and broadcaster, most notably perhaps for his work on BBC's 'Panorama' during the 1960s, though he was later reassigned to an arts slot owing to his acerbic interviewing style. He was the subject of 'The Reporter', a play by Nicholas Wright, directed by Richard Eyre, staged at the National Theatre in 2007. 'Beggars on Horseback' is the first of Mossman's two novels ('Lifelines' followed in 1971, the year the author took his own life).
