About This Item
Tate Gallery, 1984-01-01. Paperback. Acceptable. Tate Gallery [Published date: 1984]. Soft cover, 32 pp. Part of the Tate Modern Masterpieces collection, a series designed to provide detailed, informative introductions to key works in the Tate Gallery's collection of modern art. Contents include: Introduction by Richard Calvocoressi; essay by Sarah O'Brien Twohig; outline biography; selected bibliography. Black and white illustrations. This work by Beckmann captures the climax of carnival season in Germany. A period of fancy-dress parties, masked balls and street processions. The two standing figures are based on close friends of the artist. The masked clown on the floor is thought to be Beckmann himself. The Nazis did not approve of Beckmann's work. They dismissed the distortions of his figures as 'degenerate' art. In 1933 the Nazi government removed Beckmann from his teaching post in Frankfurt. Several of his works were also included in their 1937 Degenerate Art show, prompting him to leave Germany for Amsterdam. In acceptable+ condition. White illustrated paper covers have light bumping and creasing to edges and corners and light overall scuffing, aging and soiling. Sticker residue on both front and back cover as well. Binding tight. Interior pages are clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-library. NO remainder marks.
