Page edges soiled: stamped 'withdrawn' top and bottom, with bottom blacked out. Front hinge cracked. Owner's name plate on front pastedown. Interior unmarked, and contents are good. Library envelope pasted to rear end paper. BOOK INFO: 8 B&W illustrations. According to Hilaire Belloc, 'One of the vilest men of his time, whom vice drove to something like madness.' Or Charles Whibley, 'A courteous gentleman, splendid in prosperity, brave in adversity.' Or the more poignant and useful, himself, 'Not an animal comprehends me.' William Thomas Beckford (Oct 1, 1760 ? Fonthill Abbey was designed and built for Beckford to store his book collection.
