About This Item
1864. (BATTLE FIELDS). AN ENGLISH COMBATANT. Battle-Fields of the South, from Bull Run to Fredericksburgh; with Sketches of Confederate Commanders, and Gossip of the Camps. By An English Combatant, Lieutenant of Artillery on the Field Staff. New-York: John Bradburn, 1864. 1st American ed. 8vo. xxvii, [1], 517pp., maps. In later publisher's binding with printed paper title label and T. H. Knight stamped at the tail of the spine. Light rubbing to the binding and the title label. Foxing throughout. Very good. In Tall Cotton, 8. Howes B-238. "This account was written by an Englishman who, because of long residence in the South, was `southernized' to the extent of being a defender of slavery. He is vague as to where he lived and where he joined the Confederate army, but by inference it seems to have been Alabama. He was sent first to Corinth, Mississippi, thence by railway through Chattanooga and Lynchburg to the concentrations in northern Virginia around Manassas, and he seems to have taken part in all the principal battle from Bull Run to Fredericksburg.. he was a great admirer of Jefferson Davis [to whom this book is dedicated] and a thorough sympathizer with the Confederate cause" -Coulter 20. One of the most consulted Southern sources for military operations; the author was an Englishman who served briefly in the Confederate Army"-Nevins I, p.55.
