About This Item
Good+ to Fine/Near fine. This is a fascinating group of 5 volumes relating to the WWII Battle of Britain, i.e. the air warfare as the British RAF defended England from the Luftwaffe early in the war. Three are original publications published during the war, and two later illustrated volumes, each signed by multiple RAF veteran pilots. All in all, a great collection of the historic event.
The group includes:
1. The Battle of Britain, A Nation Alone, by Arthur Ward, Chancellor Press, London, 1997 reprint of 1989 original, 208 pp. Fine in color illustrated paper boards. No marks or damage. Unclipped DJ is near fine, with just slight edge wear. Signed by nine former RAF pilots on the half title page, along with their respective squadron designations.
2. R.J. Mitchell, World-Famous Aircraft Designer, Schooldays to Spitfire, Edited & in Part Written by His Son Gordon Mitchell, Nelson & Saunders Publishers, Olney, UK, 1986, 1st edition, 352 pp. This is the definitive biography of the man who designed the Spitfire fighter planes that were so critical to the RAF's efforts. Fine in blue green cloth with gilt titles on the spine. No marks or damage at all. Unclipped DJ is near fine with just slight edge wear. Signed by the author, Gordon Mitchell, and two former RAF Spitfire pilots.
3. The ABC of Flying by Lt. Col. W. Lockwood Marsh, Pleiades Books, London, 1945, 1st edition, 88 pp. Near fine in blue cloth with gilt titles on the spine and front cover. Slight scuffing at the corners. The unclipped DJ is also near fine with slight soiling and wear at the corners. Now in a protective mylar cover.
4. The Battle of Britain, And Air Ministry Account of the Great Days from 8th August- 31st October 1940, His Majesty's Stationery Office, London, 1941, 36 pp. Good + in black, white and red illustrated wrappers. Moderate scuffing and small tears along the edges and a light crease where it was folded, but no other marks or damage.
5. Combined Operations 1940-1942, His Majesty's Stationery Office, London, 1943, 144 pp. Good + in black, white and red illustrated wrappers. Minor soiling, scuffing and creasing on the wrappers. Text is age toned. But no other marks or damage. CH.
