Striking large paper study of Barbizon art and painters by David Croal Thomson in a sumptuous Hatchards binding. Number two-hundred and thirty one of two hundred and eighty copies issued, initialled by the author. An extensive study of the Barbizon school of painters, an art movement active between 1830 and 1870. Their works mostly featured landscape paintings and scenes of village life.Some of the leading artists of the movement were Théodore Rousseau, Charles-François Daubigny, Jules Constant Troyon, and more. Adorned with numerous in text illustrations and thirty seven full page plates. Collated, complete. From the library of Sir William Eden, Bart. In a beautiful half crushed morocco binding over cloth covered boards signed Hatchards, marbled endpapers and gilt to top edge. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only, light sunning to back strip. Sir William Eden's bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Occasional pencil annotation to margin, otherwise pages bright and clean. Near Fine
