Kitty, for example, is a food expert who prepares l inguine with chocolate sauce in order to save calories by combining courses . Everybody else goes to her party and happily eats it. Yet these people ar e not too weird to be believed; in fact, their foibles are recognizable, an d are exaggerated just enough. The playboy and matinee idol are gorgeous an d dim, the female radio star flighty, the scientist and book publisher dull , but none is overly predictable. Paley is witty and perceptive, and knows when to stop, so that her comedy of bad manners is not a farce.
