About This Item
Boston: Phillips, Sampson, and Company, 1858. First edition, first printing, preceding the large paper edition. Original blind-stamped, brown pebbled cloth (BAL 8781). Blanck's binding "A" with four stars on the spine instead of five, period after "Company" on title page, and rear endpapers with "Poetry and the Drama" on left and "School Books" on right. A collection of essays originally published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1857 and 1858. Spine ends appear to have been reinforced with brown cloth and we assume the spine has been touched up as it displays a semi-glossy sheen. Some wear to cloth but still attractive and very good or better with title page starting. The copy of one Isabella B. Ocliorne who has inscribed her name at the head of the vignette title page, carefully copied a few inspirational verses on rear blanks, and laid in a poem clipped from a newspaper.
