About This Item
Hamburg: Johann Carl Bohn, Printer, 1762. Full Leather. Fair/No Jacket. Full leather. (16), 912, mmm-uuu 8. With an illustrated title page depicting a village/small city from a hillside. All text in German. The first part of Anton Friedrich Busching's geographical history/survey of Europe and Asia, with this being devoted to countries and regions such as Denmark, Spain, The Germanic states, England, Ireland, Hungary, Corsica, Prussia, Scotland, Switzerland, etc. This was one of the first works to use statistical geography and was perhaps one of the first of any scientific merit (Wikipedia). Anton Friedrich Busching was a German historian and educator, perhaps best known for his Erdbeschreibung. FAIR condition, ex-theological library. Small label at the foot of the spine. Library bookplate, a small label and oval ink stamp present on the interior. The leather binding does not cover the fore and upper edges, leaving the boards exposed when looking at those edges. Pages 289-294 MISSING. All others collated and present. Minor uneven fading, some soiling and scuffing present to the covers, with a few minor stains. Leather rather scuffed and chipped at the corners and upper and lower hinges, as well as the spine tips, with some minor loss. Minor splitting at the upper and lower hinges. A few faint cracks or creases to the leather along the backstrip. A first and last endpaper may be missing, although it is possible these were just partial endpapers used in the binding process. Some staining along the first and last endpaper extremities, perhaps from old glue used in binding. A few small holes and edgewear (tiny missing sections) the endpapers and title page, perhaps from insects. Also present are a few tiny wormholes in the upper corners of several pages.Text block solid, with some toning and very minor scattered foxing. An area of staining affects the upper portion of the first 60 or so pages. Stray pencil marks in the margins of some pages, with a few notes on a rear endpaper. Page edges rather soiled and stained.
