About This Item

Melbourne: F.W. Cheshire, 1968. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 145 x 225 mm, xxii, 309 pp. Includes, appendix, bibliography and index. Hard Cover - Near Fine (a little very minor edge wear and slight top edge foxing) in a Near Fine dustwrapper. 'From Assimilation to Group Survival is a work primarily concerned with the study of Jews in Australia, accomplished by focusing mainly upon its largest and most vibrant Jewish community, Melbourne Jewry. It looks at both the organized community as such, and the individuals comprising it. In so doing, the author analyses his subject against the dual backgrounds of Australian society, and the history, religion and culture of the Jewish people. The book also examines a number of closely interwoven themes. It explains the sociological processes accounting for the re-invigoration of a community which, thirty or forty years ago, was thought to have no future and reveals the marked change in communal ideology which has accompanied it. These developments are discussed in the light of a sharp social conflict and power struggle between the long-established, patrician Australian families and the recently arrived Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe.'
