About This Item
The First UK Printing published by Methuen, London in 1907. The BOOK is in Very Good condition. Some pushing with mild splitting at the spine ends. Light toning to the spine but the white titling and decoration remain bright. A little rubbing at the lower corners. Top edge gilt. Light toning to the text-block. Decorated end-papers with a very small bookseller sticker to the lower front paste-down. Moderate spotting to the prelims and less-so to some page edges in places. Portrait frontis and illustrations throughout. No inscriptions or erasures. Loosely inserted is a 14 line , two verse sonnet which has been hand-written on one page of a folded sheet of stiff paper, dated (Feb 3 1896) and signed by Walter Crane. The poem is quoted on page 435 of the book: 'Leighton was buried in St. Paul's and had an imposing public funeral. I wrote the following sonnet on the occasion :-'. Crane was referring to his fellow artist Lord Fredrick Leighton who had died in London on the 25th January 1896. The penned sonnet does not differ from the quoted text in the book. The penned page has been folded once. Walter Crane was an English artist and book illustrator. He is considered to be one of the most influential, and among the most prolific, children's book creators of his generation. More images available on request.
