About This Item

London: Duckworth, 1975. Book. Good. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Previous owner's penned name John Michelsen professor of Philosophy at UVic to ffep top, front flap is price clipped, jacket spine is faded and the front cover faded with book-end shadow, minor shelf rubbing, little wear overall. Text is clean. 'During much of his philosophical career Plato was deeply suspicious of emotions such as anger and fear: championing the rule of reason, he criticised both rhetoricians and poets for playing upon man's emotional side. This hostility was due primarily to ignorance, since no one hitherto had thoroughly considered the nature of emotional response, and it was not until Aristotle's residence in the Academy that a new and more favourable view was developed. In consequence not only rhetoric and poets but also political and ethical theory were radically changed. In this lucid book [the author] traces these developments systematically.' 100 pages..
