Gand (Ghent):: Verschaffelt, Ambrose,, 1867.. First printing. A Fine original hand-finished color lithograph. Large Octavo (7 x 10.25 inches, 177 x 260 mm). Elegantly matted in an archival Ivory and gold French mat sized to 14 x 18 inches, suitable for framing. This large and showy print is from an unbound set of plates, with accompanying text, issued monthly for one of the most glorious 19th Century Belgian horticultural periodicals from the house of nurseryman Ambroise Verschaffelt: L'Illustration Horticole; Journal Special des Serres et Des Jardins. This work was edited by Charles Lemaire (1800-1871) a renowned Professor of Botany, as well as Classical Literature, horticulture writer and esteemed colleague of Louis Van Houtte, proprietor of one of Europe's most prominent greenhouses, Establishment Van Houtte. Lemaire edited Van Houtte's periodical: Flore des Serres et des Jardins de L'Europe, Ghent from 1845 to 1854, at which time he became the chief author editor of L'Illustration Horticole. Grand and showy, this chromolithograph by P. Stroobant was printed in color from multiple stones and finished by hand.
