About This Item

Clifton, N.J.: AB Bookman's Yearbook, 1981.

8vo. 215 x 140 mm.  [8 ½ x 5 ½ inches].  128 pp.  Bound in original red paper wrappers; some minor soiling and rubbing, otherwise very good.

Philip Weimerskirch, noted librarian and bibliographer at the Providence Public Library began his study of Antonio Panizzi while at Columbia University working under the guidance of Allan Hazen.  This publication is an expansion of term paper and published by Jake Chernofsky, editor of AB Bookman's Weekly.  Based on research in the archives of the British Library, Weimerskirch focuses on Panizzi's interactions with the book trade and the booksellers who contributed to the dynamic growth of the British Museum Library made during the middle years of the 19th Century.

Included are chapters outlining Panizzi's biography, and the collections of English books, Americana, Aldines, Block Books, maps, and music that he brought into the BM and the booksellers he negotiated with to secure these collections.  "In the nineteen years that Panizzi was Keeper of Printed Books, 1837-1856, some 302,000 volumes were added to the collections, mostly by purchase.  This is the story of the books and booksellers that helped Panizzi triple the holdings of BM collections and transform the institution into the premier library in the Western World.
