About This Item

Leipzig: Deutsche Verlagsaktiengesellschaft, 1909. ltd ed. Cloth spine and gilt-stamped boards. Signatures mostly unopened. Rubbing to extremities and corners bumped. Shaken. Else very good.. 519pp.+4pp.+xxii plates. Illust. from drawings and black and white photos. Text in German. Yearbook of folklore, sociology, and sexual customs from around the world edited and privately published by Krauss who was a specialist in the ethnology of the South Slavic peoples. This is the sixth volume of an annual that lasted ten volumes. "At this point a more logical arrangement of the contents was developed and maintained for the remaining volumes of the series. Each volume opens with a section devoted to several relatively short collections on popular speech. This is followed by a substantial section given over to studies and articles on various aspects of erotic folklore... primary texts, clearly divided into separate genre areas: folktales, riddles, proverbs, and others. The very broad scope of subject matter and sources is continued, here venturing as far afield as erotic embroideries, erotic ceramics, aphrodisiacs, indecent gestures, and animal contacts, and drawings from all regions of Europe, as well as from Japan, Nigeria, India, Peru, and Ethiopia." - from Hoffman, Selected Bibliography, page 108. "Anthropophyteia" appears in Greek letters on the title page.
