About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Annie?s return to America after the death of her father was a long time coming. After an 11-year absence, it seemed that much was changed, and her old home was not the only place that she felt alienated from. Taking care of her father in his last days had been a trying experience, and being without him after such a long time spent at his side seemed a completely surreal experience. What was she to start with her life now?

Annie Kilburn is one of the most popular and well-received novels written by William Dean Howells (1837 ? 1920). The novel was published more than 20 year after the author had started his literary career, and it ties in to his own experience returning to England in 1865 after having spent 5 years on his consularship in Venice.

Like him, young Annie had returned from Italy, but without having an easy time starting over. When she tries to find work helping sick children, she not only comes to feel attached to her new young friends, but also to Mr. Peck, the minister who lends her a helping hand.

This is a story about an authentic young woman trying to cling to life after feeling completely uprooted due to the loss of her father. William Dean Howells does excellent work not only in portraying Annie as a genuine character with traits so vivid and human that you may feel her silhouette coming alive and see reflections of your own life and experiences in hers, but also through his ability to showcase Annie?s progress and gradual transformation.

The book is a definite must-read for anyone who has enjoyed Howells? works in the past. However, even if you?re not familiar with other exciting and fascinating works from the author, such as The Minister's Charge and The Rise of Silas Lapham, you will still find yourself captivated by Annie Kilborn?s story.
