The author went to Kenya in 1953 to join the Kenya police, but encounters with the local wildlife persuaded him to devote his life to zoology. Here are his observations of East African wildlife. The animals are grouped roughly according to their habitat. The chapter on plains animals ranges from giraffe, zebra, antelope, and gazelle to the warthog and ostrich; that on predators from lion and leopard to malibou stork. Elephant buffalo and rhinocerous make up another chapter; while another on fauna of lakes and rivers discusses the personal habits of hippopotamus and the barbus fish which groom them.
