FIRST EDITION (1784), undated but only the first edition of 1784 has the author's name on the title page, small 12mo, approximately 155 x 90 mm, 6 x 3¾ inches, engraved portrait frontispiece of Mr John Kirby "The Celebrated Fisherman", Keeper of Newgate, woodcut vignette of fish on title page, pages: viii, 1-136, bound in half calf, gilt decoration, lettering and date to spine, marbled boards and edges. Upper corner of upper cover slightly bumped, tiny chips to marbled paper at top of lower cover, modern fishing bookplate on front pastedown, early signature on reverse of frontispiece, light browning to frontispiece margins, slight brown offsetting from portrait onto title page as usual, "First ed 1784" in a modern hand at foot of title page, some pages lightly age-browned, tiny ink mark to lower corner of 3 leaves, just visible on a few other pages, a small pale ink "X" in a couple of margins, a tiny closed tear neatly repaired to 1 lower margin, minor horizontal crease page 131.
