Return to Lew Chew, & Hong Kong, the suspicious movements of the French and Russians, return to Lew Chew and the second visit to Japan. Return to Edo bay, Sam Patch's letter Yokuhama [sic] appointed the conference site, signing of the treaty. * Delivery of Perry's gifts: the railroad & telegraph, the delight of the Japanese. Celebrations in honor of the treaty. Departure for Simoda. A careful description of each place the squadron visited, nicely done, loaded with notes. * Visits to Singapore, Macao, Formosa, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Canton, earthquake and volcanoes in Japan, much on Okinawa, Shimoda, Hakodadi and the Japanese. To Hokkaido & visit with the Ainu. * Robert Tomes was a member of the Perry Expedition to Japan, therefore an early and very excellent useful primary resource. * .
