New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1876 Volumes 1-16 (copyrighted 1873-1876) and the elusive one volume Index copyrighted in 1881. Revised edition of the 1858-1863 16 vol. edition). Ripley was a founder of "Harper's New Monthly Magazine". Charles A. Dana was Assist. Secretary of War under Stanton during the Civil War and the owner of the New York "Sun" newspaper after the Civil War. A large heavy set. Each volume is 10 1/8" x 7 1/4" X 2" thick. Original three-quarter leather and marbled boards with 5 raised bands on spine and stamped in gilt. Marbled paper is a bright red slick paper with blue, white and tan. Marbled endpages. Typically 800-900 pages each volume plus (vii) pages of contents at back. 810 page index. Many engraved illustrations. Full page and some doubled page colored maps with tissue. Supple leather - some scuffing. Leather has been oiled and waxed. Text is very clean, tight and bright. Some wear at edges. Index volume has some marbled paper loss on cover and some loss at bottom of spine. Volume 13 has a little leather loss at spine ends. Very good condition..
