Complete with the 16pp. introduction by Humboldt, which is often missing! - This Atlas is one of the most important publications resulting from the American expedition in the years 1799-1804 headed by the great German scientist Alexander von Humboldt and by the botanist Aimé Bonpland. During their long journey, they collected an impressive amount of information affecting all New World’s aspects, especially geography, natural history, archeology and the customs of the country. From 1805, the expedition leads to some scientific publications of which the current publication, published after ten years, represents a summa. This publication is particularly sought-after because of the quality of its remarkable aquatints, especially the one in colour set over two pages and representing the volcano Chimborazo in the Andean mountainous regions. Most of these illustrations were engraved after the original sketches brought back by Humboldt, who heavily involved himself in the current publication, of which he supervised the printing in order to ensure the accuracy of the colours. This publication is considered by most people to be the first approach to safeguarding pre-Columbian and post-Columbian Indian manuscripts, with the reproduction in beautiful colours of several important documents, including the extracts of theDresden Manuscript and of the Codex Mendoza. Highly innovative in their scientific approach, Alexander von Humboldt et Aimé Bonpland helped to impose new rules for scientific explorations. Complete copy, with the introduction dated 1813 and the last 20 boards, which are generally missing. From Robert Hyde Greg’s library (ex-libris).
