About This Item
London: Macmillan And Co., Limited, 1933. First edition. A near fine copy, some mottling to rear cover in a very good dust jacket, spine panel and edges show age darkening, some light wear to head of spine panel, some light stain spots to lower front panel. (11659). Octavo, [1-2] [i-vi] vii [viii] ix [x] [1-2] 3-369 [370] [371-372: ads], original dark green cloth, front cover stamped in blind, spine stamped in blind and gold. The author's third collection of short fiction, sixteen stories, including several of his best supernatural tales. "Walpole's two strongest stories in the genre are "Tarnhelm; or, The Death of My Uncle Robert," a strangely moving and poignant werewolf tale told from the point of view of a sensitive little boy; and "The Silver Mask," the story of a middle-aged woman's fatal obsession with a sinister and beautiful young man. "The Silver Mask" is in fact, a masterpiece, a classic example of how a tale can be truly terrible and ghostly with no ghost and only the wispiest hint of the supernatural. These and fourteen other stories (including the contributions to the Asquith books) make up All Soul's Night (1933)." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 448. Barron (ed.): Horror Literature 3-201. Bleiler: The Guide to Supernatural Fiction #1653.
