Atlanta: Peachtree Publishers, Ltd. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. (1987), 332pp, illustrated. VG in VG dj. I saw a strange movie when I was very young. It was very bleak and stark and all I remember is a scene featuring some neanderthal types trying to steal each other's turnips. It was only many years later that I discovered that the movie was Tobacco Road, based on Caldwell's first novel, published in 1932. The book caused a sensation and sold millions, but the critics were widely divided as to its literary merit. Some fifty five books later, the critics are still divided..
