About This Item
London: Dennis Dobson Ltd.. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1950. 2nd printing. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [minor shelfwear to bottom edge, tiny remnants of a removed old price sticker adhered to upper corner of front endpaper, previous owner's initials plus date & place of purchase and brief commentary written in ink at edge of rear pastedown (concealed beneath rear jacket flap); jacket has slight wear at extremities, internal and external tape reinforcement across top of spine, sun-browning to spine panel]. Fourteen tales of the supernatural, written (per the author's Foreword) "between 1943 and 1945 in a prison-camp just outside the ancient walled town of Eichstätt in Upper Franconia." Sez the jacket blurb: "Although written by a scholar, the style is pleasantly urbane and idiomatic and should therefore have universal appeal. Horror is not piled upon horror for the sake of raising the reader's hackles. Instead, an effect of complete normality is obtained, so that the spine is chilled by the knowledge that everyday life is only too liable to psychic contagion, that the devil may lurk in old title pages and ghosts haunt the bookshop." .
