About This Item

Andre Deutsch, 1970. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine red cloth with black spine lettering, extremely clean pages and endpapers, in a fine dustjacket, not price-clipped, just a sliver of grazing at top rear corner. From her home in New York, in 1949, Helene Hanff began what would become a 20-year correspondence with Frank Doel of the London booksellers, Marks and Co in Charing Cross Road. They famously never met, and after Doel died in 1970 the shop closed a little later that year. Their letters show a delightful relationship based on their mutual love of literature and culture. A charming book, memorably filmed with Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins in the title roles, and this copy is in extremely nice condition.
