Very Good - Clipped FEP, minor scuffing to DJ and boards/spine. A very nice copy. Please see photos as part of condition report 1975 1st Edition , DJ BOTHWELL AND THE WITCHES By Godfrey Watson GODFREY WATSON is a Northumbrian who has already published two books on the Border Country. It was in the course of researching the last of these, The Border Reivers, that he came across that extraordinary character, the fifth Earl of Bothwell. The latter's connection with the reivers of Liddesdale and elsewhere, his repeated efforts to kidnap his royal cousin and the powerful, if erratic, infuence he exerted on the nightmare politics of his day provided in themselves excuse enough for attempting his biography. The discovery that he was alleged to have been involved up to the neck in the Black Art opened up a further line of enquiry that was made no less attractive by the fact that an ancestor of the author was believed (quite wrongly, he suspects) to have been the last witch to be burnt in Scotland. Illustrated By: N/A Format: Hardcover, Language: English Dust Jacket: Yes, Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Published By: Robert Hale, London octavo (8vo 6 × 9 152 × 229),Pages 205 ISBN: 9780709151203 Round about the cauldron go; In the poisoned entrails throw; Eye of newt and toe of frog, Wool of bat and tongue of dog. It is more than likely that when Shakespeare was writing Macbeth he had in mind the most notorious case of witchcraft in Scottish history - no less than a series of attempts to kill James Vi by magic. Connected with the witches who concocted these schemes in the churchyard of North Berwick and elsewhere was Francis Stewart, Fifth Earl of Bothwell, cousin to the King and godson of Mary Queen of Scots. Did he consider himself, as has been seriously suggested, to be an incarnation of the Devil? Or was his trail for witchcraft an attempt by James to frame a man who by his repeated attempts to kidnap his sovereign had given the impression that he was a rival for the throne?
