And Signed by, Theodore J. Van Keith, who interviewed the Brig. Gen ---Taken from the forward by Brig. Gen. Tibbits: Twelve O'clock High is a story of demonstrated leadership by Brig. Gen. Frank Savage who takes command of a demoralized B17 Bomb Group and turns it into a fighting unit. In the books and the movie, Savage takes over the 918th Bomb Group from a commander whose compassion for his men has impaired mission accomplishment. Savage, on the other hand, insists on "Maximum Effort" for every mission; but in the end he breaks down as the losses rise and field order for more missions keep coming.
