Unto This Last

By Ruskin, John

Unto This Last is an essay on economy by John Ruskin, critical of the 18th and 19th century capitalist economists. When first published as four magazine articles in 1860 they were, in the words of Ruskin himself, "very violently criticized" and the publisher was force to halt publication. But Ruskin persevered and released the four articles in this book form in 1862. Gandhi read Unto This Last in 1904 and it had a huge impact on his social and economic philosophy, with Gandhi making an immediate decision to live according to Ruskin's teachings.

Unto This Last: Four Essays on the First Principles of Political Economy

Ruskin, John

London: Smith, Elder, and Co., 1862 First edition. Green cloth stamped in blind with gilt lettered spine. . Small octavo. Cloth slightly worn with some minor staining. Gentle lean to spine. Binding extremities rubbed with some light fraying and minor chipping to crown and tail of spine. Small tear to front end pastedown. One gathering lightly sprung. Light foxing. Late twentieth century ink inscription on half-title page. First few pages have some pencil and one ink marginal notation Unto This Last was originally published as four articles in the monthly journal Cornhill Magazine. According to Ruskin, these articles were "violently criticized," forcing the publisher to cease publication after four months. To counter this attack, Ruskin published his work in book format in May of 1862. His work looks at social and economic implications and is very critical of the capitalist economists of the 18th and 19th centuries. In this sense, Ruskin is a precursory advocate of social economy. Because the essay also attacks the destructive effects of industrialism upon the natural world, some historians have seen it as anticipating the Green Movement.

RUSKIN, John.

London: Smith, Elder and Co.,, 1862. Four Essays on the First Principles of Political Economy. Octavo. Original green cloth, gilt lettered spine, blind panelled sides, drab brown endpapers. Spine a little cockled; neat marginal tear repaired to one leaf; a very good copy. First edition. "Ruskin's first two attempts to convey his moral principles in political economic terms initially were failures, much derided in the establishment press, but they laid the foundations for the creation of a much wider constituency for Ruskin's ideas that was to keep his values in circulation even when he himself had fallen silent. The first of these was the articles published in the Cornhill in 1860, an outlet deliberately chosen because of its middle-class appeal. To the editor Thackeray's embarrassment, Ruskin's attack on the utilitarian homo economicus caused an outcry that led to the series being abbreviated, although Ruskin was allowed more space for his fourth and final contribution. The articles were reprinted, without significant alteration, as Unto this Last in 1862, and at first sold very badly" (ODNB).
