Treasure Island

By Stevenson, Robert Louis

Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. The story was originally serialised in the children's magazine Young Folks under the title The Sea Cook over a period of several months from 1881-82.

Traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, Treasure Island is the classic pirate tale, known for its superb atmosphere, character and action. It is one of the most frequently dramatised of all novels. The influence of Treasure Island on popular perception of pirates is vast, including treasure maps with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen with parrots on their shoulders.

First edition identification and notes

Treasure Island was first published as a book by Cassell and Company of London in 1883. First editions have 1883 as the year of publication on the title page with the copyright page left blank. First editions also contain multiple points of issue, including (but not limited to): "Dead Man’s Chest" is uncapitalized on pages 2 and 7, “rain” instead of “vain” in the last line of pg. 40, the “7” is missing from the pagination on pg. 127, "worse" for "worst" in the third line of pg. 197.

Other collectible or notable editions

Published in 1927, Edmund Dulac illustrated an edition of Treasure Island for Ernest Benn of London. With only 50 numbered copies printed on handmade paper and signed by Dulac, a copy of this edition sells for upwards of $10,000.

Housed in custom clamshell box. $27,000.First edition, first issue of Stevenson's swashbuckling yarn of piracy, mutiny and courage, ""the finest tale of maritime adventure that has been told since Defoe"" (Prideaux, 28), an exceptionally lovely copy, far more beautiful than usually found.""Inspired by a detailed map of an island that Stevenson and his stepson drew one rainy day, with hidden treasure and cryptic instructions reverently included… Treasure Island is best enjoyed as its author intended, simply as a good tale well told"" (Silvey, 631). The serial publication in Young Folks (running through January 1882) was not especially well-received, but on its appearance in book form the following year in an edition of only 2000 copies, the story was hailed as the best tale of adventure in print. Treasure Island

STEVENSON, ROBERT LOUIS

London: Cassell, 1883. First Edition. Original publisher’s blue gilt-stamped cloth, hinges slightly starting, some cocking, some rubbing, some slight fraying at top and bottom of spine, overall very good. With the following points: "Dead Man’s Chest" is uncapitalized on pages 2 and 7; with "rain" for "vain" in the last line of page 40; the letter "a" is not present in 6th line of page 63; the "8" is present in the pagination on page 83; the number "7" is lacking completely from the pagination number on page 127 (it is likely that the copies with the “7” lacking completely precede those copies with the handstamped “7”); the period is lacking following "opportunity" in the 20th line of page 178; with "worse" for "worst" in the 3rd line of page 197. the 8 pages of advertisements are the October ads "dated 5R-1083". The book was published on November 14, 1883 and October ads, were likely used in the earliest binding. There are copies with July ads, which may have been used when the October ads were used up, and there are copies with December advertisements. The book was issued in six different cloth colors, for which there is no established (or even supposed) priority. The most famous pirate novel of all-time and one of the great landmarks of adventure fiction. Enclosed in a custom clamshell box.

Treasure Island

Robert Louis Stevenson

London : Ernest Benn Limited, 1927 A very good copy of the first edition of this work illustrated by Edmund Dulac. In the original brown textured cloth binding with decorative gilt design to board edges and green leather spine label with gilt titles. With 12 colour plates by Dulac and numerous black and white illustrations, vignettes, head and tail pieces and decorative initial capitals. The cloth binding is in very good condition with only very slight bumping to corners (most noticeable on the back board top corner) and pulling to spine. Internally there is a neat ink signature to the fep and a small Stevenson copyright stamp overwritten with 1/6 to the reverse of the fep. There is slight darkening to the rear free endpaper and isolated light spotting generally to page edges visible when the book is closed, but this is a very clean copy. A few pages have a very slight ripple towards the top outer corner mirroring the very slight bumping to the back board corner.
