The Wind In the Willows

By Grahame, Kenneth

The Wind in the Willows is a classic of children's literature by Kenneth Grahame, first published in 1908. Alternately slow moving and fast paced, it focuses on four anthropomorphised animal characters in a pastoral version of England. The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality, and camaraderie. The Wind in the Willows was in its thirty-first printing when then-famous playwright, A. A. Milne, who loved it, adapted a part of it for stage as Toad of Toad Hall in 1929.

The Wind In the Willows

GRAHAME, KENNETH

London: Methuen, 1908. First Edition. Contemporary ownership inscription; a little foxing; tiny marginal tear in the first blank; minor cloth wear; a very good plus copy; in a custom clamshell box. This, Grahame’s first book written for rather than about children, found acceptance very slowly. His gift was to not write down to them. The Wind in the Willows eventually went through some 100 editions in its first 60 years.

THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS

Grahame, Kenneth

London: Methuen and Co., 1908. Original publisher's medium blue-green pictorial cloth, spine and upper cover elaborately decorated in gilt, t.e.g. Frontispiece by Graham Robertson. Tiny pictorial bookplate on front pastedown (Mary Elizabeth Hudson), pencil note on front free endsheet, trace of slight rubbing to extremities, two leaves opened with less than complete care, resulting in purely marginal shallow irregularities, otherwise an unusually nice, virtually fine copy, though wanting the dust jacket. Cloth solander case with chemise and gilt label. First edition of Grahame's enduring contribution to the shared literature of young and old, composed originally as a sequence of letters to his son, and as a consequence of its popularity, the key to Grahame's freedom from clerkdrudgery.

The Wind in the Willows

Grahame, Kenneth

London: Methuen & Co., 1908 First edition. Very scarce, especially in this condition. Octavo (7½x5 inches). Pp. [6], 302. Frontis illustration by Graham Robertson, with intact tissue guard. Publisher's gilt-decorated and lettered green cloth, edges untrimmed. Bookplate on inner cover, contemporary owner's name on front free endpaper, "J. H. Hody." Slightest of rubbing to outer joints, but a superior copy, fine and clean. The first appearance, in the publisher's gilt-decorated cloth, of this perennially popular adventures of Mr. Toad and Company, one of the best-loved children's books of the 20th century. Begun as a series of bedtime stories for the author's only child, the book was written after ill health had forced Grahame (1859-1932) to retire from his banking career. "One of the most endearing books ever written for children… its appeal is ageless and parents never tire of reading it aloud. Like all great books it is inexhaustible" (Eyre). A. A. Milne, who adapted this work for the stage, considered it a "household book" - i.e., found in every household in Britain, while DNB declared it "a cultural icon, and part of the world's literary heritage." The first edition of this classic can be found with some effort, but because the book was inexpensively made, and because it was used by and for children, a copy in fine condition is rarely seen. Our copy is housed in a clear lucite custom box..

Grahame, Kenneth

The Second UK Printing published by Methuen in October 1908 - the same month as the first printing. The BOOK is in near Fine condition and is in remarkable condition for its age. The Wrapper has protected the covers well and the gilt design remains very bright and sharp. Mild pushing at the spine ends with a tiny nick at the lower spine. A few minor small marks to the lower front board. Top edge gilt with other edges uncut as called for. The gilt remains very bright. Free from erasures and inscriptions. Some offsetting to the end papers otherwise apart from the occasional spot, the pages are in very clean condition. The Graham Robertson frontispiece and tissue guard are both present. A very sharp copy. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. It is the correct second issue with the price of 7/6 net to the front panel (differing only from the first issue design with a revised price). Some light soiling in places. Vertical light crease near the spine fold to the front panel. Some edge-wear to the spine ends and corners with a little loss (see images). Toning to the spine. Some light professional japanese tissue paper repairs along the spine folds and rear flap fold to the verso but these do not come through to the front. Colouring of the wrapper remains very good ( some of the images show the colouring more bleached than actually is). The wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. Housed in a custom solander book with gilt titling. A very sharp copy. Copies of this title rarely turn up with their original wrapper in such collectible condition. First printings with wrappers command very high prices - This provides a much more affordable alternative. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. More images available on request.

The Wind in the Willows

Kenneth Grahame

Published by Methuen & Co., London. 1908. First Edition/ First Printing. Frontispiece by Graham Robertson. This lovely copy of the children's classic is bound in it's original blue/green cloth boards with pictorial gilt designs to front board and spine. The top edge of the pages is also gilt, whilst the others are uncut. There is some marking and wear to the boards and edges. The spine is on the weak side, and the cloth has split on the bottom of the front spine edge. With a little tlc and some repairs this would be a Very Good copy of this children's book for a very reasonable price. Inside, the cracking to the spine is visible inside the front board, and there is a gift inscription to the front free endpaper and some spotting and toning to the pages as to be expected of a book this age. There are a few faint pencil marks to the first page, but the other pages in the book appear to be free from marking and in very good condition. Due to the damage to the spine, the binding is a little on the weak side, but with repairs this could easily be remedied. In all, this book offers the ideal opportunity to gain a First Edition, first printing of a rare and highly valuable children's classic, subject to some minor restoration. As such, it is the perfect investment for any book collector and will be a beautiful book to pass down through the generations, as this classic children's tale is sure to be much loved for many more years to come.

A uncommon advance salesman's dummy designed for the publisher's sales force prior to publication for purposes of promoting the book. This copy is INSCRIBED on the front endpaper by Michael Hague 3 months prior to publication to an individual involved in the marketing of the book. Near fine in a Vg.+ dj. (Dj. has a 1 1/2"-inch tear at the head of the rear panel, with some smaller edge tears & shallow chipping to spine ends) A remarkable production, involving the hand pasting of full-color illustrations onto the pages in the text. Some of the larger illustrations appear uncropped, as opposed to their slightly dimminshed size in the published format. A few of the smaller images at the beginning of the text have become detached and are laid-in. A little less than half the text is present, though not represented in chronological order. The remaining portion is blank. It is unlikely that more than a few copies were produced. Michael Hague's FIRST and most enduring book project.; Signed by Author(s) .

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933 Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) was an English writer; this is probably his most famous novel, a classic of children literature. It concerns the escapades of four animal friends who live along a river in the English countryside - Toad, Mole, Rat, and Badger. This is a children's story that is as much for adults as children. It was originally published in 1908 and again in 1913. The sale item shows 1933 on the title page as well as the copyright page and is probably the first American edition of the third reissue. Blue cloth binding with gold lettering on spine and three gold cartoons on front board. Binding tight but slightly cocked, with bumping at top and bottom of spine plus a bit of sunning on the spine. Surprisingly there is no foxing anywhere. Bright yellow end pages with illustration of the Willows neighborhood. Only flaw is the dedication to the previous owner on front free end page. Unclipped dust jacket ($1.00) is sunned on spine, chipped at top and bottom of spine, and worn at all extremities but there are no tears. This volume is in very good shape for the age. 12 mo (6.75 to 7.75 inches). 312 pages. Now Brodart covered to prevent further deterioration.

The Wind in the Willows.

Grahame, Kenneth.

8vo. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1908. 8vo., 302 pp., title-page printed in black and red, frontispiece with tissue guard. Original light olive-green cloth lettered in gilt with a single-rule border, backstrip lettered in gilt, top-edge gilt, other edges uncut. Slight fraying at foot and crown, and the cloth, most notably the backstrip has sunned to a light brown, framing the center of each board much like a shadow around a ray of light, shining onto a mossy forest floor. Overall a very good copy, one of those rare occurrence's that the aging of the cloth lends to it’s whimsical quality and appeal. First American edition of the classic children’s tale, featuring Toad, Rat, Mole, and Badger. The American edition was issued the same year as the English one, though in a different binding; it includes the same frontispiece by Graham Robertson. An absolutely essential book for a collector of children’s books, or for reading to a child or friend in the evening hours.
