Pilgrim's Progress: In Two Parts

Bunyan, John

L. and G. Seeley, London, 1840. Hardcover. Leather. Fine. "John Bunyan could be said to have authored one of the most influential books in the English language. But 'The Pilgrim's Progress' is so much more than an historical novel. Bunyan's plan for his readers is for them to travel through this book as an adventure through the Christian life - retold on paper and in pictures. The story of Christian and his companions has been a favourite for generations. John Bunyan's imaginative text brings out the same, practical, necessary lessons that everyone needs to know..." [Pub. Info] With original notes by the Rev. Thomas Scott. Full leather; gold on all page edges; gold tooling on cover; minor wear to hinge areas of outside covers; slight wear to the extremities. This is a deluxe and beautiful book.

The Pilgrim's Progress

Bunyan, John

London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1906 First edition thus. From the Royal Library Chef d'Oeuvre Series. Finely bound by Bennett in full dark red morocco, double-ruled in gilt with decorative designs to corners, five raised bands to spine, compartments decorated and lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, red, blue, and yellow marbled endpapers. A near fine copy with a touch of rubbing to extremities. Originally published in the late 17th century, The Pilgrim's Progress is a classic religious text that was an immediately popular and critical success which resulted in several reprint editions within the author's lifetime and beyond. An instructive and entertaining Christian allegory that addresses the struggles of faith encountered by all believers, The Pilgrim's Progress tells, in two parts, the stories of Christian's journey to the "Celestial City." Christian's wife, Christiana, and their children subsequently journey to join him there. In his poetic introduction, Bunyan explains his hope that The Pilgrim's Progress would help both the religious and atheist alike: "This book will make a traveler of thee, / If by its counsels thou wilt ruled be: / It will direct thee, / If thou wilt its directions understand: / Yea, it will make the slothful active be; / The blind also delightful things to see.". Pilgrim’s Progress.

Bunyan, John

London and New York: The Bunyan Anniversary Society, 1928. Finely bound copy of one of the most significant works of religious English literature, Pilgrim's Progress. Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised tooled bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, engraved frontispiece portrait of Bunyan with tissue guard present, engraved title page of Bunyan's wife reading the Bible to him by W. Strang. With fourteen illustrated after William Strang In near fine condition. Born story-teller" John Bunyan crafted "a story which is a masterpiece because of its gripping and basic character. We need not agree with Christian's theological technicalities; but we must share the acute agony expressed in his first lamentable cry in his search for peace and quiet of mind--'What shall I do?" (Baugh et al., 799-800). "Bunyan wrote this book in Bedford Gaol, which may bring hope and consolation to some of the myriads of those imprisoned for conscience' sake since his day... the early demand for the book was not from the learned, but from the pious and the young. It was at first fashionable to sneer at Bunyan as a writer, but the approval of such as Swift, Johnson and Walpole marked a change. Now it is universally known and loved, and the parable of salvation is accepted by all denominations" (PMM 156). It has also been cited as the first novel written in English.

The Pilgrim's Progress

John Bunyan

London - S. W. Partridge and Co, 1888 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. An attractive copy of Bunyan's most influential work, this Christian allegorical tale is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature. Containing sixty-two illustrations by Frederick Barnard, J. D. Linton, W. Small, etc. engraved by Dalziel Brothers, including frontispiece. Sixth edition. With introductory notes by the Reverend William Landels. Bunyan began his work while in the Bedfordshire county gaol for violations of the Conventicle Act, which prohibited the holding of religious services outside the auspices of the established Church of England. Early Bunyan scholars like John Brown believed The Pilgrim's Progress was begun in Bunyan's second shorter imprisonment for six months in 1675, but more recent scholars like Roger Sharrock believe that it was begun during Bunyan's initial, more lengthy imprisonment from 1660-1672 right after he had written his spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. The explicit Protestant theology of The Pilgrim's Progress made it much more popular than its predecessors. Bunyan's plain style breathes life into the abstractions of the anthropomorphized temptations and abstractions that Christian encounters and with whom he converses on his course to Heaven. Condition: In a green calf binding. Externally very smart, with just a few marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages have some spotting to the first and last few pages, and to the textblock edge, but are otherwise bright. Overall: NEAR FINE..
