The History of American Sailing Ships.

CHAPELLE, Howard I.

New York: W.W. Norton & Company, Inc.,, 1935. Quarto. Publisher's dark blue buckram with red leather lettering-piece. With the glassine jacket, housed in the original mid-blue buckram slipcase, red leather patch label. Etched frontispiece, one colour plate, 14 half-tone plates from photographs, 15 double-page plans, numerous line-drawn illustrations to the text, many of them full-page. Jacket rippled and lacking pieces head and tail of the spine, the slipcase a little rubbed and tanned, but overall a very good copy. First edition, limited issue, number 115 of 121 copies signed by the author, and with a real etching signed by George C. Wales as frontispiece. Chapelle was Senior Historian in the Department of Science and Technology at the Smithsonian Institution, and was internationally renowned for his knowledge of the naval architecture of America in the era of sail.
