Tales Of the South Pacific

By Michener, James A

Tales of the South Pacific is a Pulitzer Prize winning collection of sequentially related short stories about World War II, written by James A. Michener in 1946. The stories were based on observations and anecdotes he collected while stationed as a lieutenant commander in the US Navy on the island of Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides Islands (now known as Vanuatu). The skipper of PT-105 met Michener while stationed at the PT boat base on Tulagi in the Solomon Islands.

Tales of the South Pacific

Michener, James A.

NY: Macmillan, 1947. First printing of this Pulitzer Prize winner, near fine in a like dust jacket. Owner's name on front endpaper; interior pages are browning at edges as is usual with this book. The jacket has two tiny chips along the top edge, and a larger (about 1/4") chip at the bottom of the spine. The spine of the jacket is just slightly sunned, but the colors of the illustration which wraps from the front panel around the spine are bright and sharp. The $3.00 price is vertical at the top of the front flap. A much nicer copy than usually found of Michener's first work of fiction.. First Edition. Hard Cover.

Tales of the South Pacific.

Michener, James A

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1947. Early printing of Michener's first book. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author with a full page inscription on the front free endpaper, "To Sandra Zouvelle, This is a very special edition, autographed twelve years later for the daughter of the family. Good Luck James A. Michener Newtown PA Sept. 11, 1962." Additionally signed again by Michener on the half-title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Laid in is a vote for Michener congress card. In 1940 Michener began a nine-year association, interrupted by World War II, with the Macmillan publishing firm as a social-science editor. In October 1942 Michener enlisted in the U.S. Navy reserve, was commissioned the following February, served for a year at desk assignments in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, and in April 1944 was sent to the Pacific theater of operations. He was partly an aviator inspector but mostly a publications officer. His visits to some 50 islands inspired his Tales of the South Pacific (1947). Originally scheduled for publication in 1946, the book did not actually see print until the next year, when Macmillan issued it with a new, tipped-in title page dated 1947, as here. Although the book won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction, it remained little known until South Pacific, the 1949 musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, made him famous and rich. Then he began to write full time" (ANB). Contemporary name to the inside panel, near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket.
