Spring Fire by Vin Packer
Spring Fire, is a 1952 paperback novel written by Marijane Meaker, under the pseudonym of Vin Packer. It is often considered to be the first lesbian pulp novel, although it also addressed issues of conformity in 1950s American society. Spring Fire was by Gold Medal Books, and sold 1.5 million copies through at least three printings. Cleis Press re-released the book in 2004 after extensive negotiations with Meaker, who had long denied permission because of her feelings about the ending.
Shameless and seductive in an era when lesbian lives were hidden from view, Packer chronicles the story of Leda and Mitch, two sorority sisters at a Midwestern university in the 1950s who stumble into a forbidden love affair.
